The Fin and Feather Story

Fin and Feather Pet Shop was started in 1968 by Pat and John Smith. We bred show parakeets in our home and would sell some of the birds to local pet shops. On December 5th, 1968 we walked into a pet shop named Noah’s Ark, located where Empire Wok is in this shopping plaza. The owner said he didn’t want to buy any birds because he was thinking of selling his business. After spending the day discussing the business, we walked out that night with the key and Fin and Feather was born.
The first few years were difficult, but because of our dedication to customer service and hard work in the business, we were able to open a second store in Westerly, RI in 1970, which we sold three years later to an employee. In 1973 we opened a second store across the parking lot which specialized in puppies, kittens and grooming. In 1980 we moved to our present location and combined both shops.
Before we entered the pet business, Pat was a registered nurse, and I worked as a machinist. Because we both liked animals we decided to buy the pet store. We’ve never been sorry. It’s a great business. We have had many great employees who still come back to say “Hello”. We recognize we’re in the pet business, but Pat and I often say we’re as much in the people business.
We want the business to continue to grow and realize that dedicated employees and local customers are the reason we are here today, and will be here tomorrow. We will do everything we possibly can in the years to come to make Fin and Feather an enjoyable place to work and shop.
